Code of Conduct
This Code of Conduct applies to everyone on Wallace Centers of Iowa (WCI) property, including program attendees, visitors, private renters and their guests, vendors, contractors, and partner organizations, at both the Wallace House and Wallace Farm. By visiting, attending a program, or booking our space, you agree to follow our Code of Conduct. WCI welcomes all visitors and program participants, and provides equal access to our programs and property regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, or disability.
1 Respect for People
Treat staff, volunteers, and fellow visitors with courtesy and respect.
Harassment, discriminatory language or behavior, and unwanted physical contact will not be tolerated.
Follow the directions of WCI staff and volunteers at all times.
Adults must supervise the children in their care, especially around equipment and the historic house’s furnishings and exhibits. Minors must be accompanied by a supervising adult unless part of a WCI-organized youth or school program with its own chaperones.
Keep noise and behavior respectful of other guests, programs, and our neighbors.
2. Respect for the Property
Do not touch historic furnishings, artifacts, or exhibits unless invited to.
Food and drink only in designated areas; no smoking, vaping, or open flame indoors.
Stay within the areas open for your visit; some rooms and grounds may be closed.
Stay on marked paths and out of active work zones, crop fields, and prairie restoration areas unless a program leader brings you there.
Do not touch or operate farm equipment without staff permission.
Leave gates as you find them; do not remove plants, produce, or other farm products without permission.
Drive slowly on the gravel road and park only in designated areas.
Use the trash and recycling containers provided.
3. Safety
Do not attend a program if you are feeling sick or showing symptoms of a contagious illness.
Dress for the weather and uneven farm terrain.
Follow posted signage and staff instructions around equipment, fire, and event infrastructure.
Report any injury or hazard to a staff member immediately.
Follow staff instructions without delay during severe weather or an emergency.
4. Alcohol, Smoking, Prohibited Items
Alcohol only where WCI has authorized it; no outside alcohol without advance approval.
No smoking or vaping inside buildings or near barns and other fire-sensitive structures.
Weapons, fireworks, and illegal drugs are prohibited.
Drones and commercial photography or filming require advance permission from WCI staff.
5. Pets
Service animals are always welcome at both properties.
Leashed dogs are typically welcome at the Farm outside special events; check event guidance, as pets may be restricted at festivals and large gatherings.
Pets are not permitted inside the Wallace House. Owners are responsible for their pet’s behavior and cleanup.
6. Photography & Media
WCI may photograph or film public programs and events for promotional use. By attending a program or event, you may appear in these materials unless you let staff know otherwise.
7. Enforcement & Complaints
WCI staff may address violations of this Code of Conduct, up to and including removal from the property without refund. Serious violations, including harassment, violence, intoxication that endangers others, or damage to historic property or the farm, may result in immediate removal and, where appropriate, a report to law enforcement. To report a concern or file a complaint about anything covered by this policy, contact a staff member on-site or email info@wallace.org.
