New Event Support
With a $5,000 grant in 2020, MidAmerican Energy supported a full season of “Pizza on the Prairie”–a new family-friendly event at the Country Life Center. Freshly-made pizza packed with straight-from-the-farm veggies, accompanied by beverages, sides and desserts, offered patrons a socially-distant opportunity to enjoy live music and a prairie art exhibit. Pizza on the Prairie each Friday June 26 to October 2.
WCI is using a $41,000 grant from the State of Iowa and matching support from private donors for an extensive renovation project at the Country Life Center. The historic Farmhouse, the oldest building on the property, is being transformed with a new roof, windows and siding, plus some upgrades to its electrical and plumbing systems. In addition, a new accessible ramp connects the main sidewalk to the Farmhouse ramp.
With the help of 18 volunteers who donated 54 hours of hard work, WCI planted and harvested nearly 2,300 pounds of sweet poatoes from the Garden for Good. The harvest was divided between the Food Bank of Iowa and Eat Greater Des Moines, two organizations dedicated to assisting food-insecure Iowans. The Meyocks Group of West Des Moines is supporting the Garden for Good with a $4,000 gift for the next 3 years.
